How to Get Smarter…Rationally
In a famous rebuke of Jensen Huang’s declaration that you shouldn’t learn to code because AI will be able to code for you (great prediction), Jared Friedman insisted that “even if every prediction Jensen makes becomes true…you should still learn to code, because it literally makes you smarter.”
As someone who learned to code later on in life, I can remember how coding positively attuned my ability to think, so I resonate with this statement quite a bit. Coding makes you a more logical thinker, and becoming a more logical thinker can help you solve problems where logic is present, such as business, finance, process improvement, etc.
Emotional Intelligence
But, there is another type of intelligence that coding cannot touch — the emotional. Since code, by the fabric of its very nature can only express rationality, it cannot model emotional scenarios, because they are not based on rationality, but instead feelings. So, how can you gain emotional intelligence? By practicing of course!
Understanding People, The Key to Emotional Understanding
What, then, is the greatest source of emotional understanding? People. We are a fundamentally emotional creature. One who will say that their mind made a decision, when it was truly their heart.
In my experience, nothing has made me more emotionally intelligent than by engaging in sales. Here, understanding the person you’re talking to from their head to toe is crucial to success in the sales realm.
Therefore, sales success requires a deep understanding of emotional intelligence, how people think, what they mean when they say one thing, and why they do things in such a seemingly contradictory way.
Sales Makes You Smarter
I guess this means that sales, like coding makes you smarter, but in a different way. Whereas coding sharpens your logical thinking, sales attunes you to the emotions built into the very nature of people. My Own Experience
