Learn how to use the Conversation Builder to design custom conversation flows and responses for your training scenarios

Last updated: 7/17/2025

The Conversation Builder is a visual tool that allows you to design custom conversation flows for scenarios. Create branching dialogue paths, set conditions, and define specific responses to build realistic training scenarios.

Overview

The Conversation Builder provides a visual interface for creating and editing complex conversation flows:

  • Node-Based Design: Drag and drop to create conversation flow
  • Visual Connections: See how different responses connect
  • Easy Editing: Click to modify any part of the conversation
  • Preview Mode: Test your conversation before publishing

💡 Tip: Whether you're starting from scratch or customizing an AI-generated scenario, the Conversation Builder provides the same powerful editing capabilities.

Getting Started

Initial Setup

If no nodes exist, start by clicking "Add Conversation Path". This creates the foundation for your conversation flow.

Layout Options

Choose how you want to visualize your conversation:

  • Vertical Layout: Nodes flow from top to bottom
  • Horizontal Layout: Nodes flow from left to right

You can reformat the diagram at any point by re-clicking the vertical or horizontal buttons.

Node Types

First Message Node

Icon: Speech Bubble (Purple) Purpose: Configures how the conversation begins

The First Message Node determines how your conversation starts:

  • First Message Mode: Decide whether the AI (buyer) speaks first or waits for the user (learner) to begin
  • First Message: Set the initial message if the AI speaks first

If Node

Icon: Message Square (Green) Purpose: Includes a condition and a response

If nodes are the core building blocks of your conversation. They contain:

  • Condition Criteria: What triggers this response
  • Response Content: The buyer's response to the learner
  • Response Type: Choose between verbatim response or guidelines

Schedule Call Node

Icon: Calendar (Blue) Purpose: A back and forth conversation until a follow-up is scheduled

This specialized node type:

  • Manages Follow-up Scheduling: Handles the process of scheduling a call
  • Requires End Call Node: Must be followed by an "End Call" node
  • Natural Flow: Creates realistic scheduling conversations

End Call Node

Icon: Phone Off (Red) Purpose: Conversation exit point

End Call nodes conclude the conversation:

  • Predefined Phrases: Choose from predefined end call phrases
  • Multiple Options: Different ways to end the conversation
  • Natural Conclusions: Realistic conversation endings

Node Interaction

Selecting and Editing Nodes

Click on any node to select it for editing. The edit panel will appear with options specific to the node type:

If Node Editing

  • Edit Condition Criteria: Define what triggers this response
  • Edit Response Content: Write the buyer's response
  • Toggle Response Type: Switch between verbatim response or guidelines
  • Add Child Nodes: Create sub-paths for different scenarios

End Call Node Editing

  • Choose End Phrases: Select from predefined end call options
  • Custom Endings: Create unique conversation conclusions

Sub-paths Management

  • Add Child Node: Create new branches from the current node
  • Remove Child Node: Delete unwanted conversation paths
  • Branch Logic: Design complex decision trees

Hover Interaction

Hovering over any node will display its full contents for quick preview without opening the editor. This allows you to:

  • Quick Review: See node content without editing
  • Flow Understanding: Understand conversation structure at a glance
  • Efficient Navigation: Move through complex flows quickly

Canvas Navigation

Dragging and Zooming

The canvas is fully interactive for easy navigation:

  • Draggable Canvas: Click and drag to reposition the view
  • Zoom Controls: Use the scroll wheel to zoom in and out
  • Better Visibility: Zoom helps with complex flows
  • Focus Areas: Zoom in on specific conversation sections

Visual Flow Management

  • Connection Lines: See how nodes connect to each other
  • Flow Direction: Understand conversation progression
  • Branch Visualization: Clear view of decision points

Edit Panel Controls

Close Button

  • Saves Automatically: Changes are saved as you make them
  • No Data Loss: Your work is preserved when closing
  • Quick Access: Easy to return to editing

Add Child Node (If Nodes Only)

  • Creates Sub-paths: Adds new conversation branches
  • Conditional Logic: Build complex decision trees
  • Response Variety: Create multiple possible outcomes

Delete Button

  • Removes Node: Deletes the current node
  • Cascading Deletion: Removes all connected child nodes
  • Clean Structure: Maintains conversation integrity

Best Practices

1. Start Simple

Begin with basic conversation flows and add complexity:

  • Core Path: Design the main conversation flow first
  • Add Branches: Include alternative responses gradually
  • Test Thoroughly: Ensure all paths work correctly
  • Iterate: Improve based on testing and feedback

2. Logical Flow

Create conversations that follow natural progression:

  • Realistic Responses: Match responses to learner actions
  • Appropriate Timing: Place objections and challenges naturally
  • Consistent Character: Maintain buyer personality throughout
  • Clear Objectives: Each path should serve a learning purpose

3. Testing Your Flow

Regularly test your conversation design:

  • Self-Testing: Run through scenarios yourself
  • Path Validation: Ensure all paths lead to logical conclusions
  • Response Quality: Verify responses are realistic and helpful
  • Learning Effectiveness: Confirm scenarios achieve training goals

4. Organization

Keep your conversation flows organized:

  • Clear Naming: Use descriptive names for nodes
  • Logical Grouping: Group related responses together
  • Consistent Structure: Maintain similar patterns across scenarios
  • Documentation: Add notes for complex logic

5. Customizing AI-Generated Content

When editing AI-generated scenarios:

  • Review First: Understand the AI's approach before making changes
  • Preserve Intent: Keep the learning objectives in mind
  • Enhance Quality: Improve responses while maintaining flow
  • Add Specificity: Include company-specific language and processes

Advanced Features

Complex Branching

Create sophisticated conversation flows:

  • Multiple Conditions: Different responses for various situations
  • Nested Logic: Complex decision trees with multiple levels
  • Dynamic Responses: Responses that adapt to conversation context
  • Realistic Variation: Natural conversation progression

Response Customization

Design specific buyer responses:

  • Tone Control: Set the buyer's communication style
  • Knowledge Level: Define what the buyer knows
  • Pain Points: Include specific challenges the buyer faces
  • Objections: Integrate realistic buyer concerns

Integration with Scenarios

The Conversation Builder integrates seamlessly with your scenario configuration:

  • Persona Integration: Responses reflect the selected buyer persona
  • Product Context: Conversations include relevant product information
  • Objection Handling: Naturally incorporate selected objections
  • Scorecard Alignment: Design flows that support evaluation criteria
